Objectified: A documentary by Gary Hustwit
I thought this movie is just going to make me see how things are made in the factory or by hand but it didn’t. Its about the designers, their point of views, how they come up with useful designs and how designers are constantly changing things to be prepared for the future.
“There is a story embedded in every object, a decision was made some point about some thing.” - Andrew Blauvelt, Design curator, Walker Art Center
It centers about industrial design but I can relate to what they feel too. Its hard to conceptualize and to be innovative all the time. The feature about Apple fascinates me; About the process and not just the design. They should have made it longer.
Somehow at the middle of the docu I got bored. Almost all the people featured are saying their ideals then it suddenly shifted to designs in the past that are now in the wastelands. There are a lot of opinions going on.
Maybe I’m just an ad person so I didn’t get to appreciate designing forms of certain things. I do recommend this to be watch by industrial designers, for them to see the perspective of international designers and for them to be more innovative on what they do.
Helvetica by Gary Hustwit(2007)
The documentary about Helvetica made me felt amazed of the typeface from then and now. I was surprised that I’m part of the Helvetica revolution, where designers are sick of the neutral. Nevertheless, Helvetica was a great font. I agree about making the contents speak and not the type. Its just that it became too main stream and other designers want a more ‘un-neutral’ feel.
“The frightening and the most difficult thing about being what somebody called a creative person is that you absolutely no idea where your thoughts come from really specially you don’t have an idea about where they will come tomorrow.”
Art and Copy by Doug Pray(2009)
This was a film given to me to watch by my creative director when I was in Bates 141 as an Intern. This documentary inspired me about the previous advertising world and how the admen back then transformed a brand. I am amazed on the advertising agencies. They are so huge unlike other agencies here in Manila that only top agencies has now. Some of the best campaigns of the centuries were tackled here and it was amazing. Some of the creative directors didn’t even believe that the ads will go big.
This is really a must watch to all advertising individual.
